For our project we have been asked to design and create a digital self portait of ourselfs using Adobe Photoshop CS6. In order to accomplish this, for my research, I have identified the different types of digital self portraits such as typographic self portraits, low poly and sketch.

Typographic Self Portaits

For my artwork I will create a digital self portrait of myself using the studio. Once this has been done, I will edit the Raw image into Adobe Photoshop and make a typographic design.

In addition, I am going to style the typography in a way that anchors my interests, hobbies and representations of myself, for example: Ideas include.

  Interests

 Tv Shows -

South Park

Family Guy

  Hobbies

Sport -

Football

Video Games -

Mortal Kombat

Crash Bandicoot

Identity (Things that represent me)

Sport -

West Ham

Country of Heritage -

Animal -

Dog (Symbol - loyal)

FIG.1
For my first portrait, as stated above, I have taken ideas from typographic self portraits and used them to create my own style of portrait. The self portrait above was created to show my favourite televison programme and movie, since a young age I have always been fascinated and intriged with not only the transformers figurines but the cartoon and movies series, the reasoning for implementing this into the portrait is because I have always enjoyed the series and the idea behind it. Then there is south park, since the release of south park I have always been a avid fan one of the best comedy shows on television, I own and have watched all the series up to this date of South Park and will remain a fan until it finishes. In terms of the actual design of the photo, I have made the photo appear as a cut out copy. The reasons behind this were that it relates to the film Transformers, the photo appears on screen in different parts like everything has been transformed. The style of the texts are the same as the tv show and movie title, this is iconic as it attracts a primary and secondary audience.

 HOW I DID IT?

First of all, I lowered the saturation of the picture to its lowest, then opened levels and made the difference from light to dark smaller to get this stencil like portrait.
I also cut the picture in two to represent a split. I then used the wrap mode on the transform tools to shape the text with my face

FIG.2

The portait above was created to show a number of different things, from emotions to wants and needs it offers people to view the portait and make up their own opinion on what they see, the different colours represents different emotions (Different visual effects to get a painting like effect), the crystal blue represents being happy, the green represents being content, the dark purple represents being unhappy and the black represents being upset and angry, all of these emotions are emotions that students go through all the time.

HOW I DID IT?

Divided each frame with the box tool used as path and more than one layer used seperating the images in different blocks and colours

FIG.3

In the portrait above it has many meanings to me, It was the first pub I went to in Swansea when I went to see Swansea play West Ham at the Liberty Stadium. Going to Swansea will forever be engraved in my memory as a place of new beginnings and a new home. The reasoning for adding my picture to this photo was to represent that this is now my home and that no matter where I go in the future I will never forget the places I visited. This portait also represents a mimic of my favourite stencil graffiti artist 'Banksy' who's work I looked at and took idea's from not only do I find his work fascinating creatively but the meaning behind the stencil work also leaves me very entriged.

HOW I DID IT?

Lower saturation to a minimum to get a black and white picture. I then changed the levels until the white was selectable with the wand tool.
I used the gradient tool to get a nice gradient on the colar.

FIG.4

The portrait above represents me and the football team I have supported since the age of 5, West Ham United, football has played a massive part in my life with me being obsessed with the concept of football since a very young age and still now nothing pleases me more than watching my football team play and me particpating in football, I will forever be claret and blue. My mood in the photo reflects upon the sadness of relegation from the top flight of the Premier League, despite being in a good position in the Premier League now, it reflects upon the recent struggles being a 'hammer' West Ham fan.

 HOW I DID IT?

Used path and manualy followed the shape of the face to make it fit. I then intersected all the different pathes to get this pattern.

FIG.5

The blocks represent different sides of me, different points of view. The colours are faded and are split. The light and dark colours reflects upon the different emotions going on in the photo. The darker areas in the photo, connote power and mystery. The colour white is polysemic, which has many constrating meanings, for example: It signifies the brighter side of myself. Moreover the colour white is associated with light and goodness. This adds a positive connotation to the image, following a pattern from happiness to sadness.

HOW I DID IT?

Different layers, different opacities, different hue's but same picture. Cropped different images into one.

FIG.6

The above photo represents two main themes as the expression on my face is a lonely one, it is showing sadness and a cold, distant nature. The second theme is reflected in the phone held to my face, it represents technology and the modern age. By duplicating the photo in the phone's screen I have linked these two themes into one collective idea, the link between the modern technological age and the increasing feelings of unhappiness as people become more concerned with artificial worlds and less concerned with the one we live in.

HOW I DID IT?

I duplicated the original color picture and made one of the copies in black and white to get a great contrast. once the color picture inside the black and white picture I started duplicated the image, then duplicat both so the proccess went faster and faster until the last picture is not seeable by the eye.

Other Design, I have created:
